Case study: Ofqual

60 compliance staff were put through a tailored course

Rosemary Carter, associate director for regulatory compliance at Ofqual, the body that regulates exams and qualifications in England and Northern Ireland, has recently put all her compliance staff through Chartered IIA training.

In the past year, Rosemary enrolled all 60 of her regulatory compliance staff onto the IIA Award in Compliance Audit and Assurance. These courses were one-day workshops that took place at Ofqual’s offices and were tailored to meet the needs of the organisation and the compliance team, none of whom had a formal internal audit qualification.

'As I have a strong audit and investigation background, I wanted my team to see the benefits of taking an internal audit approach to the work that we do, and use some of those skills in their day-to-day work,' says Rosemary.

'The training has been well received internally. My team could see the benefits of how an internal audit approach to their work can help them, and the fact that the course was specifically tailored to our organisational needs made it immediately relevant and useful for our working practices,' she adds.

The training has had another positive result – several members of the compliance team are interested in taking the Chartered IIA’s professional qualifications.

Building on the success of the initial training, Rosemary is now taking her team through the IIA Award in Corporate Governance and Risk Management next year.  Another positive result is that several members of her regulatory compliance team are interested in taking the institute’s professional qualifications.

'There is no doubt that the training has greatly benefitted my team and the organisation,' says Rosemary.
